[CHICKENS-101] Winter planning?

Not sure if this came through before, so apologies if anyone has gotten it twice...

Looking ahead to goodies for the chickens during the winter, I've planted some fall cabbages and some extra turnips and carrots--anything else I might put in that would store well?  (Hopefully I can get a proper cold frame built that will double as a hot bed for part of the winter, so they can have some fresh greens.)

Also--will chickens eat acorns if they are cracked with a hammer?  (The acorns, that is, not the chickens...)  I usually gather a bucketful to use myself, so it will not be much extra work to get some more if the chickens will get some good from them.
Thanks for any ideas!
