Re: [CHICKENS-101] Tell me about Roosters

So far it sounds normal.  Not all roosters become mean.  I'd just keep watching.  I personally don't like roosters we've had several bad ones so if we get a rooster it has to stay in a seperate pen.  Angela

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Tell me about Roosters

We got 4 chicks in late April. We wanted 4 hens for eggs. All along we suspected one was a rooster.....no longer questionable.
He is an Aracauna. We have treated these chickens like pets all along. My kids hold them daily, so although they run a bit when we try to catch them, they are really calm and allow us to hold them.

Tell me about having a rooster? I am really torn between finding a new home for him and having a "wait and see how bad it is" attitude.

How much "sniping" among chickens is normal.....? By "sniping", I mean the little pecks or squabbles when one chicken pecks at another that is trying to nose into the feed dish or chasing them across the yard occasionally? Is this normal or indicative that the rooster may be mean?

Thanks for any help or insight.
