Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Feeding food scraps the reality of it all

Chrissie, Maybe you could put a hot plate outside and cook your chickens spaghetti and other non meat treats outside. LOL!  Just reasing.
I just put in 16 hills of summer squash and zucchini for my chickens. The hills we have now at my parents will last about another 4 weeks. I have 7 one month old plants here, plus several pie pumpkins plants. Am putting my pyramid pens with extra fencing on it around my tomato plants and threatening my husband with grave injury if he wrecks one of my pens!
Can you raise fruits and veggies for them and feed them right from the vines? There is no way that could be construed as kitchen waste, could it?
I am having to scatter dog droppings around the garden and walk my dog around the around the garden during the day and night trying to discourage deer and woodchucks. The deer and woodchucks here even eat our tomato plants.
I moved two tomato plants and planted numerous started pepper plants inside a fenced pen today. Planted 65 day cukes in the middle of the pen on the fencing roof support that looks like a 3 pipe antenna pole. I have part of the pen fenced off from my chicks. To let my little chicks play outside I have to have them in a pen inside a double fenced pen with fenced roof and buried fencing. I have to have something for my chickens since there are no early pears or apples, no peaches, nothing, all fruit trees are bare of fruit.

I've also read articles on-line that say that and I wish I could be convinced that it was true. I have always fed scraps to my chickens to supplement their diet of layers' pellets, and I'm really sorry to have to stop. However, I spoke to the duty vet at DEFRA yesterday and she said she'd have to check it out. She later came back and said that the ban does indeed apply to home scraps fed to one's own chickens.

It is exceedingly annoying. It is clearly not enforced much and I'm sure most people are completely unaware of it. However, since I have this ridiculous problem with my neighbours, and they may end up persuading the council to come around to inspect my chickens, I have no choice but to abide by the law.

Best wishes

Chrissie
