Marlene,
I think those ceramic things are maybe made for indoor use only? Meaning, they're not going to last as long in colder temps. Not sure 'tho........am just thinking of refridgerator and walk-in cooler lightbulbs and using regular bulbs in them pop much faster.
The floodlight that I use in the coop is one of those that you can get for outdoor lighting decorating especially in the wintertime around Christmas. You know, the kind that people light big areas of colors onto the outsides of their house with? This green one is going on I believe it's 4th year of helping to keep the coop warm - believe it's a 100 watt. I turn it on at night, and off in the morning (usually - unless we're going to have a super windy-cold day). In addition, they also have a 40 watt regular light that's on a timer to go on at 5AM & off at 8AM (when I'm out feeding so open their clear-plex covered windows to let the day's light & sun's solar warmth in), then on again just before whatever time dusk is and off at 10PM.

Kate,
>Years ago I did a ton of research on color effects on animals before choosing the color of "night"light to put up in their shelters...........and later, chicken coop as well. Red was the one color advised to stay away from because it had an "exciting" effect on them.......whether it was infuriation-'excitement' Consequently, I have a green (blue works too) floodlight bulb to keep my chickens warm at night but not keep them up & awake or "excite" them in any way.
I might try that, I do not like the red lamps because I have also observed it to cause them to be more aggressive and pecking at each other, almost like they think now everything needs to be pecked because it is red. However I did run two red heat lamps this week when temps were near and one time even below 10 degrees, and they made it okay through the night with the red bulbs. Have to look for the other colors to see how that goes. I used to use the ceramic heat bulbs, but the one problem I had with them is that when I used the ones with 250 watt, they consistently melted and broke just below the metal part that screws into the fixture, the sparks were flying and after trying several times with the same results, I gave up on those, I only had one that lasted me for a whole winter and it worked great, no light output but lots of heat. I wonder if there are any brands of those that would not have this problem, but I tried two different kinds and both had the same problem.
