Susan .... you have to consider acclamation .... chicks raised  in lower temps from early on will tolerate colder temps better then ones raised with warmer  by temps.  This can also vary breed.

My goodness, how cold is it where you live!?  It was in the 20's last night where I live in Georgia and my chickens were in thier house with lots of straw and no lights or heat and all were out running around this morning when it got up to 45.  My chickens range in age from 3 months to 2 years.  I cover the fence of their run with plastic in the winter and give them more straw to play in and all day access to their house in the winter.  Feed them some scratch each afternoon and hot oatmeal with layer mash in the morning and they are happy!.   Susan
