Cathryn -- they are dead. But I am feeling horrible and wish I did my research better to know that you had to add water to the dry ice when the temps fall below some number (around 32, I would imagine). When my husband went to check on them as I was writing that last msg. he came back to say they had passed. just to see what would happen, he added water and it immediately produced lots of gas. So perhaps I have unnecessarily caused my 3 girls to suffer? They were unconscious but still breathing for 2+ hrs. I am feeling so sad... off to bed I go w/ tears in my eyes still.
Thank you for all of your help here. Perhaps my experience will help others.

p.s. if anyone wants to tell me I'm a wimpy or bad chicken owner because I didn't want to shoot these birds or break their necks or cut off their heads, please refrain! I've known these birds for over 5 yrs and was trying to be as non-violent as possible with them.
I'm not even going to check this site for awhile because I am so sad over all the killing we've done since Friday here at our farm.
