I've no experience with electric fence for chickens; however, I've used it lots for cows & horses. You have to be watchful that not even one small blade of grass touches any part of the fence whether wind blows or not. You would need to keep the grass (not to mention bushes, tree limbs, etc.) well clear of the fence. Also, many animals (mostly the fuzzy ones like raccoons or prickly ones like porcupines) seem to evade the electricity easily. My German Shepherd learned quickly that only her nose got zapped—so she ducks and runs right under it.
Just don't want you to spend a bunch of money and time. They may offer better electric fencing today, but I do know the kind we had kept the horses and cows in most of the time, but other animals often found how to get through...

ELECTRIC FENCING: Questions....do some of you use them at night to protect your flock??? With this new coop and run project this Spring I am really considering an electric fence around the whole thing to be used only at night. Fencing about 3-4 inches off the ground then another strand about 6 inches above that.
