Kristen,
Don't be hard on yourself. Because you shared this with us, we have all learned something and perhaps the next person who needs to put down a chicken will be able to do it better. You didn't know and I doubt anyone on here knew that the temperature would affect things like it did.
I'm really sorry you had to go through this.I had a chicken that I think became egg bound. I couldn't find a vet who could treat her without charging me a fortune because they are considered exotic pets or 'throw away' birds. I ended up doing the best I could for her and she appeared to get better, but one day I found her dead in the coop. It's heartbreaking. I've learned a lot from this group and if it helps you feel any better, I've learned from this.
hugs,
Cassie

Kristen, I am so so so sorry about all this. It is sooooooo painful to lose a pet. I care about my critters a great deal. I feel sad even when I lose a small fish in my aquarium (think guppy). It feels terrible but you did the right thing by your hens. Be very gentle with yourself.
Linda
