Re: [CHICKENS-101] Bird bugs

Dr. Doug ,
I would personnally inspect the birds around the vent area .... this is where mites and lice (if on the bird) will usually congregate . Use a magnifying glass if needed .
I would use the sevin dust only if they had mites or lice (i was thinking sevin dust had been removed from the market by our fed. gov.). I tried to get some couple years back and they said no more (it was one of the few things we had left that worked) .

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Bird bugs

Merry Christmas all.
I have a question, my wife noticed a small bald-ish spot on the back of one of the girls.
She went on-line and very soon I was told my girls had a lice infestation, OK Tally has a little bald spot, I checked Rhoda and she is fine, but I read the article my wife found (http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/08/poultry-lice-and-mites-identification.html)
and in the article it said to use Sevin-5 on the birds, well my local True-Value carried it so I went in and got some, BUT... the guy at the store (who I know very well) and the container says very clearly NOT to put on pets.
So... I am looking for more input on this subject. Again, I found nothing that looked like mites or lice on the only spot on one chicken.
And I certainly do not want to introduce something to them that may harm them in any way.
Thank you
~Dr.Doug
