[CHICKENS-101] Re: Frost bite?

I didn't go to work Friday or Monday. It was just 3" solid ice and my drive is an hour in good weather and no traffic so I just stayed home. It took me two hours to drive in Tuesday and Wednesday, an hour and a half Thursday and today it was finally a normal day. Almost all the ice is off the roads but there are still spots and it is piled up on the sides of the roads and still on the grass. Texas is not used to this! My driveway and yard are still all ice. I don't ever remember us having this much ice for this long! Luckily we didn't lose power so the coop stayed warm. I finally turned the light off yesterday for the first time. I was so surprised that the ice didn't phase the chickens at all. They played and pecked around in it all day long. I am concerned about their water intake. I just have a 3 or 4" deep round metal pan for their water and it wasn't dirty and didn't look like the water level went down at all. Should I worry about it? Maybe they got enough through pecking the top layer of sleet? My husband said that he felt the water and it was warm but he didn't think it would be too warm (the light is about 2.5 -3' above it). I only have 7 chickens left so maybe since they haven't been playing in it, I just can't tell? All but one of my girls have started laying now and I'm so happy! It seems like we have waited forever! I've got 6 hens and a rooster (Cogburn) now. A hawk got 3 hens and a baby rooster we had the last few months :-(.
