[CHICKENS-101] Re: Fw: Monsanto vs. the Monarchs - downloading free books

Since the origin of this downloading free books thread had to do with a book (which can become books plural) about chickens, I'm going to venture to go just a hair "OT" on this, in hopes that this might help more people that may be coming across this same barrier with downloading – well, a lot of things actually, but also books:
Your computer shooting you a warning to quick shut down, that it deems a download – especially from a reliably safe source – as being unsafe, may very well be coming from malware that's infected your computer and is mimicking it to make it *look* like something authentic.  I recently came across this with someone & their computer, and when it "warned" that same thing with attempts to even download Malwarebytes (which is a free program), the solution recommended by my professional computer tech, it became indisputable that the computer had been infected by malware.  Fortunately for this person the PC was still under extended warranty with Geek Squad and they took care of it & cleaned everything up, but if it hadn't been the next step would've been to download that program onto a memory card/stick from a different computer so it could be accomplished offline.  From that I gathered that malware is only able to control a computer when it's online.

At any rate – just something to keep in mind if anyone else experiences this same problem.  It's likely not the source itself that you're trying to download something from – it's a problem in your computer.

Yikes. You have my sympathies. I'm very surprised at Amazon. I hope you let them know what happened.

Mary Beth, Once when I went to down load a free PC book, my computer shot me a warning to quick shut down, that the site wasn't safe. It was on Amazon too. Ever since I have not down loaded books from there or elsewhere unless it was a edu, .gov, college, ET..similar. Since school requires much on line work and reading, my experience/scare with a free book link, I have resorted to books I can hold in my hand and turn pages.
