Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Challenge a fox

I feel bad for the hen who was mortally wounded and suffered for a week before she died.  I am not anti gun and spent years teaching DNR hunter safety and am a NRA instructor.  Each to their own, I would have taken care of the fox.  It wouldn't have been back to kill more hens and leave hens mortally wounded.  I am curious why you didn't put the mortally wounded hen to sleep rather than let her suffer for a week before she died.

I am a totally, completely anti-gun person.

A few years ago I had 4 hens about 10 weeks old killed by a fox.  Two were gone, one was dead, one was fatally wounded and died about a week later.  A few night later, I hear a the chickens squawking - about 2 o'clock in the morning in the rain (of course) I grab my robe, run outside and there is a fox standing looking into one of the chicken coops.  I screamed, I ran at him - he ran a bit away and just turned around and sat there and looked right at me.  I went ballistic, I couldn't even find a freaking rock to throw at him, finally I just threw my flashlight at him.

Bottom line - as I was standing there in my impotent face off with this fox, I thought to myself - If I had a gun buddy you'd be dead.

The first time in my life I've ever wished I had a gun.  This fox be-deviled us for a couple of years.  She/he hasn't been around for a while now.  Knock-wood.  And no - I didn't get  gun.
