[CHICKENS-101] Re: Sick Serama

So sorry to hear that your hen is sick. I can empathize with how you feel.

I bred cats for many years and nursed them through all kinds of things. While I can not offer a diagnosis for your hen, I can share some successful approaches for getting liquids into her..

Then hen is not going to open her mouth for you. You will have to open her mouth. What I do is use a fingernail to open the beak and the, one drop at a time, administer the fluids. You can not do more than a drop at a time or she will aspirate and that is really bad.

The concoction I've been giving to my birds when they haven't been feeling well is 1/4c water, 1 1/2 tsp of a natural sugar source (honey, maple syrup, molasses) a couple of drops of b-vitamins and a tiny bit of colloidal silver (like 1/16 of a pill shaved off). Mix it up and give it to the bird only one drop at a time. I give a total of 1cc per feeding, one tiny drop at a time.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time with her, holding, cuddling and keeping her warm. It takes me about 20 minutes to administer 1 cc.

The goal is hydration (water), energy (the sugar source) and a bit of a vitamin boost for the immune system, warmth and quiet.

The most spectacular save I did was with a turkey that I thought was dead in shell, but when I opened the shell, the little guy was alive. I held him all night long, wrapped in hot wet paper towels and gave him the elixir noted above, one drop at a time for a total of 1 cc, then 20 minutes of rest and repeat.. He lived. Then he nearly drowned himself in his drinking water and I warmed him up with a blow dryer, held him again and gave him more elixir. He's a fine young turkey now.

Good luck with your hen.

I found her sitting on the bottom of the cage at and at first thought she had died, but when I picked her up she opened her eyes. She is breathing normally, and I don't see an injuries. She is just very listless, won't eat or drink. I tried giving her some water with a medicine dropper but couldn't get her to open her mouth. Anyone have any ideas?
