Hi Shannon
Cat foods – and dog foods - here (in the uk) are pretty variable in quality as I guess they must be everywhere. Within reason, I keep a good stock of wet foods and I am happy to feed any of those; people have to bring their own food if a cat is on a prescription diet, or if it's something that they order in specifically, such as Orijen. I have a standard dry food mix for the boarders, my cats & rescues, which consists of a variety of foods, mainly at the top end of the quality spectrum. Basically I'm trying to make sure the majority of cats have something in there that they recognise! I do include Purina in my standard dry food mix for the cats, but I'm not too keen on it. The dogs have James Wellbeloved which you might not have heard of – the one you mention isn't available over here AFAIK. What breed of dogs do you bred?
Until 6 weeks ago, when I lost her, my oldest cat was almost 20; the oldest now is one of my stud cats (still!) who is 17. I do breed Burmese & Siamese & Burmese particularly are pretty long lived.
The hens do seem OK although I have lost a few over the years very young – 2 (almost certainly from the same clutch I would say as identical, although I got them just before POL) who died with tumours, which I assume was Marek's, although they were vaccinated and none o the others ever developed anything. There was about an 18 month gap between them developing it. I have also lost 2 araucana – one about 6 years ago and one at the beginning of this year – with some sort of wry neck. I did think it was possibly head injuries but I saw it mentioned somewhere recently as possibly being bacterial, which hadn't occurred to me – I shall make sure I give antibiotics if there's a next time, just in case.
I haven't hatched any eggs except, years ago, some Japanese quail. They hatched fine but I lost virtually all of them at a few weeks old and I never worked out why L
Sorry, rather OT again!
Sue

Sue that sounds good to me ........ you are to be commended for having happy 10-12 year old hens !!
I think they answered your questions ......
we ask them if they want to keep their pets on same food they eat at home ........ if so , bring it with them or they eat ours which is 80-90% of the time better than what they bring .
Our show dogs eat Purina Pro Plan Select(salmon)(they also at times get beef , pork, eggs, chicken and etc) , for the kennel and ones not showing we use Sportsman Pride Premium and SportMix .
Give them old hens a thumbs up from me ,
Shannon
