Last winter I ra a little short on bedding, and threw in some grass clippings that I'd bagged for mulch. The chickens loved it! (of course you'd have to be certain that there are no chemicals on it.) So, this year, whenever I had extra grass clippings that weren't needed for mulch, I spread them out to dry and put them in old feed bags. I think there should be enough to see the chickens through the whole winter.
If you root cellar at all, you can try (next year!) to grow some cabbages to save--or else buy them at the store or winter farmer's market. Hang one up for you chickens--keeps them busy for hours! Not only good food but entertainment when they are snow-bound. I have a greenhouse this year, so once I see how our own salad greens work out, maybe I can raise something for the hens as well.
