Re: [CHICKENS-101] "Older" Chicks not eating the "ground" part of chick starter

Hello Jennifer,
My birds having been leaving fines too.  I collect the fines and when I have a good amount, I mix them with molasses and some of my regular feed.  Our birds go crazy for this mixture.   The molasses binds the fines with the regular feed.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] "Older" Chicks not eating the "ground" part of chick starter

Hello. Hoping for some sage advice. These are my first chickens.

I got 25# of Buxton chick starter (non GMO, etc.) from our local coop here in Seattle and I had a question. The girls love the food, but since they turned about 5 weeks old or so, they've been picking out the big bits (peas, etc.) and leaving the more fine components (what I'm sure is ground grains, etc.). I know that the feed is not off (smells sweet, properly stored, etc.) and I think they're just being picky. Any ideas to ensure they're getting the benefits of the complete feed?

They do get free choice grit in their coop because I also give them a spent plant from the garden, etc., occasionally.

Thanks for any thoughts!
Jennifer
