Yes, chicken wire is poorly named. I am using hardware cloth with a very small opening so mice and rats can't get in. So far, it has been an excellent choice. My coop is completely enclosed with a perimeter of buried stepping stones turned on their side to discourage digging into the coop.
I live in a Redwood forest with bobcats, raccoons, coyotes, mountain lions and foxes all happily hoping to get a fresh chicken dinner. So far, they have been out of luck!
