Chicken wire keeps chickens in but keeps zero predators out. Any strong determined predator can shred poultry fencing.

Earlier this year, I was so glad that I took time to close up my girls at night when I came out one morning to discover that something had dug and tore open the chicken wire near the door of the yard. don't have bears but this could have been (according to the fish & game guy) a coyote, large raccoon, or possibly a dog.
I don't allow the girls to spend the night outside since early one twilight a mink got one of my girls. It was small enough to get through the chicken wire (no contest) and fast enough to corner and kill one of the girls. After that as soon as the sun touches the horizon the girls are sent to 'bed-bye'

It is close to the same in Michigan except you need to be on some kind of hand out to get their vote. They are determined to squish flat everyone who is working and leave them dirt poor with no benefits left.
I've lucked out, the people who bought the home with the apple orchard on the way to my parents have been letting me pick their un sprayed apples. I've picked thru carefully picking apples good enough to eat out of hand, and carrying them in little buckets to the truck, to fill up my larger buckets. (Will I ever get strong enough to be able to do something with out a hundred extra steps?) I am hoping today they will let me pull my truck up and fill it full of perfectly good huge apples on the ground that only have a bruise on them. I'll make apple sauce for me and the rest will go to my silkies.
