[CHICKENS-101] Re: Opinions?? Wing Clipping-mean or protective??

Mary,
Do you mean clipping the wing? or just the feathers? I have had
great success in preventing chickens from flying over fences by clipping the
long feathers off of one wing (so they can't fly straight). If you clip the
feathers it is completely painless - much like cutting one's fingernails. I
have heard of clipping wings which sounds really painful and horrible to me
- like cutting one's fingers off. Plus when just cutting the feathers, they
will grow back in over time so it is not permanent.

Ok,my beautiful girls (seven) have become adventuresome and like to go
outside of their 1/4 acre fenced-in-area close to our house so we can see
and hear them. They are flying over the fence into the front where
unfortunately we live on a pretty busy road, into the neighbors yard, and
into the way-back of our property which backs up to the woods.
I do not like keeping them only in their pen, which is 12x12 and completely
covered with wire, latches, etc...they love to free-range. They look at me
with such pleading eyes when I lock them up! really they do!!
I am torn between clipping feathers and keeping them inside their big yard,
but possibly taking away their ability to fly for defense if needed...
thoughts please!
thanks
Mary
