Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: What do chickens do for you??

Stephanie,
Could you get interested in a breed of chicken you like where  you start off with birds that meet the standard for that chicken? They don't have to be show birds, only meet the American Poultry Association and the American Bantam Association if they are bantams.  You could sell hatching eggs.  You would have eggs and extra cockerels for food for the household and make a decent price for a dozen eggs.  That would pay for feed and bedding and maybe even the part of the horse's feed.  It's more fun to get 25-35 for 12-14 eggs, plus 16 for shipping and handling, than $2 or 3.00 for a dozen eating eggs.

Dean,
You had many interesting things to say. And from your response and everyone elses, sounds like chickens are just fun little critters to have around :)
My boyfriend doesn't have a big tv, motorcycle, 4-wheeler, boat, or anything of the sort. He has a nice pick-up truck, but its a 2006. It sure doesn't make him money, and he doesn't use it to tow trailers for his cattle. Everything else he has makes him money. Cattle, tractor, and 70 acres of farm ground. And if his farm ground doesn't produce, he has insurance for that, lol. He's pretty sure that if you have something, it should be making you money. His passion is cattle. I like the cattle, and I enjoy working them and taking care of them, but they aren't my passion. I like chickens and my horse. Neither of them are ever going to turn a profit, and he will probably forever be snorting and cackling at me.. I have come to learn that this is how most men are (can't speak for women.. never dated any LOL). Their way is best, end of story. I settle for less than what makes me completely happy because there aren't any really good ones out there. My boyfriend is wonderful, except for the constant jabs to get me to have a "hobby" that pays. I'm trying to get used to this since my objections to his attitude on the matter are falling on deaf ears..

Anyways, back to chickens. I will have chickens again some day, regardless of what others think. How can you not like chickens??? :) I think they are beautiful, comical, and useful.

> Hi Steph, Chickens are first and foremost a food producing animal and I might add that they are quite efficient in producing eggs and meat if well cared for. Chickens are also interesting creatures that for some reason become attached to their caretakers by various degrees.
