RE: [CHICKENS-101] Incubators

I have the Genesis that came with a preset thermostat.  It keeps very accurate temps……..I keep a thermometer sitting on the eggs as a second thermometer inside the bator to make sure it is consistent and so far, so good.

Could the thermostate be bad in yours?  Maybe a new one would help keep the temps more consistent.

I keep ours in the downstairs rec room where we have a/c in summer and heat in winter so it is a consistent temperature in the room.  The instructions do say to keep in a room with consistent temperature, which is why I never kept it in the garage.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Incubators

I have my incubator in my bedroom because it is the only room in the house with any semblance of heating and a/c. Right now though, I am having a terrible time keeping the temperature adjusted. Our nights are in the 40's, our days are in the 80's and I have to adjust the temperature ten times every day and all night long to keep the thing in the required range.

My brooder, which is outside in a shed, keeps its temperature within half a degree no matter what the outdoor temperature is and I have never had to adjust it.

Is my incubator defective? Is this how they all are? Is there a more reliable thermostat that I can retrofit it with? Such as the one installed on the brooder? Or is my experience with the brooder just dumb luck? The instructions on the brooder said that it had to be kept in a climate control area to heat up to the required temperatures, no mention of special conditions for keeping them steady, but I have not found that to be the case. It is amazingly reliable no matter what.

Thus far, I have not found that the temperature fluctuations cause any hatching problems but I worry myself sick over ruining the eggs and not having the little cuties hatch.
