Silkies do not mind small quarters, are beautiful, and enjoy being pets. So do seramas. If you do not mind very small eggs seramas are very nice chickens. Some of the hybrid egg layers are docile and gentle-I'll have to look up which ones again. Like Eric said cochins and buff orphingtons do not mind smaller spaces, but they both tend to go broody like silkies and seramas do. There's several gentle breeds mentioned in the below sites. The British site is my favorite. Cathryn

I'd take Henderson's breed chart with a grain of salt. They have a couple of breeds listed as flighty that aren't at all.

I wanted to get this in response to the new food bill. I predict that raw eggs will soon be banned by the Feds as raw milk and almonds are. All eggs will have to be pasturized. I am retired and have plenty of time to keep my "flock" happy and clean. Outdoor space is available but I plan to keep them inside most of the time. Any info would be appreciated such as the breed best for indoors. I like the big fluffy ones. I was called crazy for this ides but I don't think so. Too each his own. Hello and thanks
