The problem with deer is that they don't ever read the lists of deer resistant plants. So they just eat and sample everything. I live in an area with deer and I don't get them on my property. I think the best deterrent is a mountain lion. A hungry one!!
Seriously, I don't have deer, and I do have at least one mountain lion that cruises through my area. I also have a German Shepherd and a small yappie dog. So I think the dog idea is a good one. Maybe you can just borrow a dog on occasion or invite friends to bring their dogs over. Also, don't have a compost pile that is uncovered as that will attract them.
But mostly, the dog will work. Get your friends to always bring their dogs with them when they visit. The noise and the smell of the dogs will help a lot.
Good luck. I know how frustrating it can be when the deer graze through and eat everything in sight.
