Sounds like a good plan to me. I'd start giving your hens a little extra protein and poultry vitamins two -three weeks before you bring him in. Same for your rooster. Then give him treats to tidbit your hens too. Alfalfa leaves, baked sweet potatoes, a little wheat for strong egg shells and E, (I'd stay away from GMO feed and grain when hatching), cantaloupe melon, et... foods high in A and vitamins/minerals.

Thanks, most helpful... So I could reasonably expect a week's worth of fertilized eggs from a two or three day's dalliance (assuming the hens find the roo acceptable) Pretty sure I could let him visit for a couple days and have him home before the town got involved. Keeping him in the basement overnight would help cut down on the 5AM alarm clock issues. :)Of course they can, and as the article explains that they can dump up to 80-85% of an unwanted rooster's sperm. Hens have a little storage are that as we breeders have found out can last up to 3 weeks (sometimes a few eggs longer). Three weeks is the standard to wait before collecting eggs hatching.
