Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Pellet or crumble?

How in world would feed get wet and turn into mud unless one's coop is a nasty, wet, muddy mess to begin with?   I can't imagine feeding outside where wild birds can eat and defecate into feeders either.  There are rods for trench feeders, some trenches are up on stands with fencing over the top so birds cannot get into the feeders, but can eat easily. The guard part flips over out of the way easily to add feed.  I have a couple of them for my standard birds, one I cut down for my silkies, and many of the 15.00 trench feeders that have a bar in the middle and legs I put on wood to put them up to my silkie's height. I fill them half full to prevent billing out.

Oh the crumbles make an awful mess!
The minute they get damp or wet they turn into mud and the chickens won't eat it.  Besides, they scratch it all over, then won't eat what was scratched out of the container.

They really are designed for cage chickens who have a feed tray just outside the bars, so they can stick their heads out and eat.  No fun scratching, but total, neat, food consumption.

Maybe some feeders work better than others.  Maybe I just haven't found one yet.
