Thank you all so much. Yes, I am going to secure the food well and I have 2 feral cats and one of my own. One of the ferals just had 3 babies but they don't seem to make it much past 5 weeks even when we have brought them in the house to tame them down. I am thrilled with all the replies and I have determined that I will just not worry about it. Thank you and no, I would not let it deter me from getting chickens.

I guess my last post wasn't exactly helpful. I keep my feed in the basement because I don't have any outbuildings yet. Anything venturing forth during the day is killed by guineas or chickens. I have house cats, feral cats and an English Shepherd and a hound and I have only seen one live mouse I rescued from the guineas. The rest were dead or dying.
In your case I would use metal cans. Also check for any holes they can get access into the building where you store the food and you should be ok.
I wouldn't let it hold you back from getting chickens.
