RE: [CHICKENS-101] Mice

Thanks so much for the info.  I've kept the link to show my husband.  I will also keep the food outside near the coop.  We don't have a garage, just an old run down outbuilding of sorts.  I don't even go in there because I know there are mice in there but it isn't over run.  The cats do a good job out there.  I haven't seen raccoons, but I have seen possums, although, not lately.  I've also seen skunks.  Thanks again, I appreciate the advice.

My personal experience is that the chicken food belongs OUTSIDE in a metal can with a lid. Secure it more if you have trouble with raccoon's getting into it. I made the mistake of letting a small bag of corn get put away in an one car garage and it became rodent ranch. I was overrun. It was awful. I had to empty the entire garage, clean it with bleach, scrub it down completely, rodent proof it and then make sure all the openings were sealed. I now keep the food in a small metal garbage can near the coop with the lid on.

I also rebuilt my coop and used hardware cloth and built a reverse Wichita Chicken Coop.   I used hardware cloth and it has been an awesome investment. The small holes means that rodents cannot get into the coop so my chickens are not sharing their food (and germs) and don't have to freak out because a mouse has invaded their space. I also don't really want my chickens eating mice so keeping them out solves all those problems.

I went from being overrun by mice (including having an owl perched outside my garage to eat them as they came and went) to not seeing a single mouse or a sign of one ever since I built the new coop and put the feed into a  can.

Good luck,
