I just had a flashback to a friend's story. She had deer troubles, and had a very high fence around her back yard. She also had several dogs--a couple of huge mastiff-types, and a much smaller one. One morning she let the dogs out, not realizing there was a deer that had jumped into the yard. The female mastiff and the tiny dog took off barking, the deer ran only to drop dead before it could jump the fence. The little dog pranced all over the yard--"Look what I've done, I'm a great hunter!" The mastiff, on the other hand, apparently was afraid she'd get blamed for what happened and wouldn't go anywhere near afterwards!
Actually, I'd been thinking... What about tying back some saplings with a trip wire so they'd come swishing down or across if a deer tripped them? It wouldn't be lethal, and of course *you'd* have to remember they were there... but it ought to send them scampering to some degree!
