RE: [CHICKENS-101] Do chickens mourn?

> I was just wondering if they are mourning their rooster's death. Any
suggestions?

I don't know how a chicken experiences the loss of a flock member, but I do
believe if they had a close relationship that they experience some kind of
emotions when they lose one. I lost one of my Buckeyes to a tragic accident
where she fell behind a crate and couldn't get out, I found her dead a few
hours after I had seen her last. I have another Buckeye and those two had
always been very close. I believe that her "sister" knew what happened as
in the weeks following this accident I found her several times sitting near
that corner (I had removed the crate) and looking at that area as if she
was looking for her missing sister. It really broke my heart to see her
there. For a while she was always running up to me and chatting and walking
along as if she was thinking I could somehow bring her sister back. She
seems to be okay now, but I do believe we oftentimes disrupt friendships
and families when we buy or sell animals, or in case of livestock, butcher
them. Whatever they feel, I do believe they have feelings and maybe we need
to give that more consideration and respect.
