When I started in Chickens back in the late 90's; I had a road frontage rural 1/2 acre with a large field behind me. This time of year; thru August; I'd have anywhere from 300-500 birds including chicks, juveniles, & adults; I was "swap-meeting" on the weekends; buying/trading new stock, & delivering orders from customers during the week. I had several good venues for swaping/selling; places that weren't dominated by locals who tried controling new sellers when they'd show up (I detest people who think their birds are made of gold, & yours are worthless.)
I never had any issues with the numbers of birds I contained in a small area when I started; from smell or otherwise; they all got to free-range; except the bantams & chicks. With the large field I hd behind me; they'd scratch wild seeds to their hearts content; plus cut grasses when I'd mow the lawn.
