I live in southwest NYS, right on the border of the 2 counties with the biggest deer, bear and turkey take in the state. We have more federal and state forest land than the Adirondacks. It's wild, and deer are a first rate problem.
If you drive around the back roads you will see lots of people who have literally built cages around fruit trees, bushes, gardens, pigeons, and other things. Just buy 2 x 4's and chicken wire and start in. Chicken wire will keep out dieer, turkeys and wild birds, the biggest problems. And some electric fence around the outside. A weedwhacker will keep the grass down.
It works. Plant in blocks and frame it in. Staple the chicken wire on.
And a dog, preferably more than one. They'll fend off bears and people.
You can do it with your strawberry patch. 2 x 4s aren't all that much, make it big enough to walk in, and long rather than square, with a door on the end for yourself. However there you will have to contend with squirrels and chipmunks, diggers, so you might have to bury the sides of the wire a bit and put some bricks or stone along it to discourage them. Or you could make it low, frame and hinge lift up squares to get at the plants.
It's the only way to save thiings sometimes.
You can also buy recordings of barking dogs, and various scents at sporting good stores.
I used to have an old radio that got to where it would go on and off at random times. We took it out in the corn patch and set it up, tuned it to a station with talk and loud music.. Worked really well on the raccoons!
You can also get a thing with red lights that look like animals eyes at night. Check the chicken catalogs.
Smiles,
Diane S.

I will try the Irish Spring in the strawberry patch, on pot hangers, and see if they work. As the plants come up the deer are determined to eat them. Many people fed the wild life this past winter so instead of herds thinning down there are even more than before.Cathryn rainbowsilkiesTM in Michigan
