Eveline has been sitting on a clutch of eggs for nearly three weeks. I have finally found out who she reminds me of when she gives me the deadly "don't you DARE even THINK about looking at my eggs, you EVIL WOMAN!" She's the spitting image of my 5th grade teacher, Miss Gladys Ricketts, who could break locker doors with a single slam and split desk tops by closing them violently. Miss Ricketts introduced herself to a terrified group of 10-year-olds with this: "My name is Miss Ricketts, and my father found the disease!"

She was around 70 at the time, very tall, and used to utter epitaphs like, "You're just like your grandfather, Bradley Johnson!" (Poor Brad. He was a t--a--l--l towhead who would turn beet red if you even looked at him. Miss Ricketts broke a ruler on his head, once.)

Miss Rickets was one of the best teachers I ever had, despite her frightening exterior. I remember several of the books she read to us that year vividly and have actually looked for and found long-out-of-print copies of them. (This Dear-Bought Land about the founding of Jamestown, By Secret Railway and the Underground Railroad before the Civil War, and Rabbit Hill, and The Enormous Egg, about a New Hampshire boy whose chicken hatches out a baby triceratops.) In l960 she was teaching ecology and conservation. I remember learning in depth the cause of the l930's Dust Bowl and why contour plowing is so important.

God bless you wherever you are, Miss Ricketts!
