Re: [CHICKENS-101] Just placed my order for more chicks and poults!

Laura, How fabulous you found a job in an area you enjoy and feel passionately about. I agree with you about getting dogs and cats fixed, there are too many and not enough homes. Please keep mus posted about how your job goes and special pets that come in.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Just placed my order for more chicks and poults!

This past year, we had excellent luck with raising and selling Red Star pullets, so I just ordered 50 chicks, and since my current flock is aging (oldest are 6 years old, youngest 1 year) I am adding another 25 Rainbow Assortment.  I drive myself crazy trying to determine all their breeds, but it is a good kind of crazy.

I also order 15 turkey poults.  A nice variety....7 Royal Palms, 4 Midget Whites, 2 Chocolates, 2 Blue Slates.  I am looking forward to the variety and we will process the toms in the Fall...........hens, too, if we end up with many.  I will offer some for sale and Val (on this list) is taking a couple or three.

I haven't been on much since I got a job!  This is my first paying job since I left the workforce on Jan 15, 1997............and my first day was Jan 15th, 2013............how's that for co-inky-dink?

having been out of the workforce for so long and no college degree, I didn't expect anything earth shattering, but I applied for a job I had seen advertised last Fall and apparently there is a good bit of turnover.

I am only working part-time, about 24 hours per week, but have been told that as I am needed, I may be asked to work more.  I am pretty flexible since dh is home full time, so that will probably work out fine.

I am working for a Low Cost Spay and Neuter clinic and we also run a Low Cost Vaccine clinic on Fridays.  I have felt a passion for spaying and neutering for many years and have done lots of rescue work, so this is right up my ally.  They are small and situated in the county animal shelter so we have lots of traffic in and out.  I really like it and no benefits is fine.......I wanted the hourly pay and don't need insurance or paid holidays. (although I WOULD NOT turn down paid holidays if they changed their policy)

It is AMAZING what vets charge for spays and neuters and our vet provides the same level of care as any other vet.  She actually has her PhD and we have a Vet Tech and an Anesthesia monitor for all animals in surgery.  I am very proud to work there and am so pleased they are ALWAYS busy!  Public awareness regarding the spaying and neutering of pets to prevent unwanted pregnancies is alive and well!

So, that is my news for the month of January!  I chose a ship date of April 8th since I wanted all at one time and AFTER Easter since my daughter and I are going college touring. I can't believe she will be leaving for college in another year!

Take care, everyone.  Stay warm and dry.  It is frigid as a Witch's T%* here and I am hating it!  I know it isn't nearly as cold as some places.........but it is too cold for me!

Laura
