My Amish friends much prefer leghorns to any other bird. They said that
they will continue heavy laying for up to three years, but with
consistency during winter only for the first season. Second season
there will at least be a molting time, and some of the birds don't pick
up again with regularity till spring. Their preference is to get
started hens (from Amish relatives who have a kerosene powered brooder)
each spring, keep them through the following spring when they get a new
batch of started hens and harvest (can) the year-olds. Sara
