We live in an older subdivision in a small north Georgia town and had a fox come on our back porch. They also dig. You have to be careful these days because wild animals are becoming unafraid of people Susan

I lock the chickens in the coop at night, since it is sturdier than the run. A determined fox could get into the run, but could not break into the coop. We call it "putting the chickens to bed". If you feel predators are not a risk, and the coop is only for shelter from the weather, locking them in the coop is unnecessary. But beware, foxes are more ubiquitous than you think. They are moving into suburban and even urban areas.
