I had a similar problem with coyote hunters. They run their dogs and/or snowmobiles all over creation not adhering to private property laws, shooting up a storm and endangering the people/livestock who reside on these properties. Trying to reason with them by stating they're breaking the law and requesting that they refrain from coming onto my property did nothing. They were nasty and threatening (some had obviously been drinking) and totin' loaded rifles. In this case, one doesn't want to belabor a point, eh?
Before I put up fencing, their dogs were a huge concern as the poor things are kept starved and will kill anything...including my chickens. To deter them, I started capturing their dogs and feeding them inside my garage. That at least, put an end to the days hunt.
When that didn't deter them, I threatened to smash the dog's radio collars with a sledge hammer. Since those things are expensive, that got their attention for awhile but, not for long.
I then went into `Columbo mode' and secretly followed their vehicles. When they went into the woods to retrieve their dogs, I got their license plate numbers. No easy task as they smear them with mud. So there I was, lying belly down on the side of the road wiping the plates off hoping not to be discovered and strung up from the nearest tree. I then gave the plate numbers to the DNR. Problem solved.
Calling the police does little to stop this kind of hunting, they're reluctant to get involved or follow through. However, it's the DNRs business to monitor hunters and they don't cotton to this kind of behavior and will make a concerted effort to do something about it *IF* you know who's doing it.
I did get a verbal lashing from the DNR for putting myself in harms way but...it worked. Now if by chance their dogs wander onto my property, THEY call the police for an escort up to the house for my permission to retrieve them.
Columbo beats Daniel Boone ;)
