[CHICKENS-101] Re: Lost a Hen

Sorry for your loss - we just came home to find the same with our red hen. Hubby noticed she didn't come right out of her coup this morning, but eventually she made it out on her own.
She was fine otherwise this morning and afternoon, but has passed away sometime in the last few hours.

We live in an urban city, what do you do with a dead chicken?
Can I take it to a vet? Hubby wants to bury her in the yard, but I'm afraid something will just dig it up.

What is the life expectancy of feed store chickems? She didn't have any symptoms except that she had gone through a molt recently and had lost some weight. Her crop was not impacted. She didn't have any noticeable dischage or other symptoms. She ate in the morning when I fed her and I found her dead with no signs of trauma later in the afternoon. I have 11 hens left and I am worried about them. They go in the coup at night and free range on 1/2 acre during the day with horses and goats. I de-worm them quarterly on the same schedule with the horses and goats. I would appreciate any insight that will help me keep my flock healthy.
