[CHICKENS-101] Re: Why not Purina - Anita B.

If the mill mixes it's own feed, then you can ask them to custom grind it a little more course for you as well.  You can also have them mix any other things you may want into it as well.  That's what the mill near me does, for both my horses & chickens.

For them to custom grind it more to your liking doesn't cost them or you anything more - they're going to be grinding it one way or another, fine, medium, or coarse makes no difference to them on that.  And you could even have them substitute some of that corn for black sunflower seeds instead - but, I would suggest before you mess with the mix too much, find out all it's nutritional values for the chickens, and how whatever you want to add or substitute would affect that first.
Mills are usually pretty good about doing things like that, and pretty knowledgable about it all as well.

There is one feed mill and one Tractor Supply close by, but they all
give Purena type feeds.  There is a feed mill in Bethel, that is over
half an hour away from home, that will make its own feed, and I think I
will switch to that for the winter.  Bad thing is that it is powdery and
has a little more ground corn that I am comfortable with.  But fifty
pounds of it is less than fifty  pounds of Purena.  I may "dress it up"
with bird seed and Black Oil Sunflower Seed.

I have thought about Sweet Feed, but I worry about it spoiling.

Good to have you back, Cathryn!!!
