cant add much more to Jeff's extremely helpful post but I would add that I've used citricidal (grapefruit seed extract) with really good effect on both ex batts and 'posh' hens.

It's an antibacterial dietary supplement. You only use a tiny amount if they're a bit under the weather but don't bank on it for anything serious - you need a decent vet for any of the nasties.

Plastic waterers are, in my humble opinion, better than metal, for the simple reason that the surfaces are easier to keep clean (low tack and less likely to breed colonies of bacteria because of surface erosion/oxidation) and defects are easier to spot.
