Scratch is the chickens' equivalent of our "junk food." You need to get
them age appropriate feed, and save the scratch for a treat or to add to
their food during winter, when they get older. I am not an expert, but
I learned this my first winter with my first batch of ducks and
chickens, years ago. I wondered why they looked so scuzzy when their
shed was clean, and they got clean water every day.
