Very true. For my adult chickens, I put 2 pieces of 2x4 about a foot long on the floor. Over that I put a black rubber horse dish, I think the rim is about 4 inches high. Inside the horse dish I put three 2x2's cut to fit inside the dish. Then on top of the 2x2's I put the water dish. This puts my water dish above their bedding and keeps my barn dry. For feed, I put two 2x2's on the floor, then the rubber horse dish, then a tank feeder inside the horse dish. Any feed that is billed ends up in the horse dish instead of the floor. I also have a old water dish base that is broken on the top, (some have actual covers, but most broken water bottoms - help is hard on them)
