"Keeping waterers clean" and "Chickens" is a contradiction in terms. Just not possible, unless you go to the on demand nipple system. I put waterers for my chicks up on large springform pans turned upside down. Keeps the waterers "cleaner," but not for long.
For my juvenile and adult birds I put 18" x 18" ceramic floor tiles on top of nesting boxes and buckets, well clear of anything the birds could perch on and poop down onto them. Be sure to place the tiles upside down. The slick decorative surface is just too slippery, while the rougher underside works just fine. I keep extras so that I can take the tiles out and replace them without having to immediately wash them. The dirty tiles are leaned against the house in the hopes that a rain shower will wash them clean before I have to get at them with a hose.
With the chickens, I always remember my mother's saying: "Cleanliness is next to Godliness - and next to impossible, too."
