No, you aren't wasting time getting the chicks to drink sugar water. A
warm heating pad, wrapped with a towel does wonders in keeping the
little darlings warm. If you have children's Pedialyte, that would be
another good thing to give the chicks.
Put the heating pad in one part of the carrier/cage, and put their water
and feed in the non-heated part. Best wishes to your and your little
