I always kept mine in the dark .... either on the closet floor or under a bed, in a shallow rubbermaid-type container (such as you would use for sweaters). They did very well.

They would be hard pressed getting loose. They don't fly. They can't climb up the glass walls and they are in my kitchen and I don't think they can open doors.
