Jean, they are getting the good stuff out of the poop! and this summer they'll eat the fly larvae for you. Mine head straight to the horse pens when I turn them out in the morning.

If you really want to have fun, try cleaning corrals with chickens around! Turds that held no interest are suddenly the best stuff ever! I can rake everything into a pile and in the two seconds it takes to trade the rake for the scooper, those hens can fling everything further than it was to start with!
I've learned to set out a fresh dish of food for the hens and then hurry and do whatever chores need doing while they are busy eating.
