I am also a renter and have 12 chickens, 1 duck, 1 rabbit, a cat and a dog. Our landlord knows I asked before hand. Luckily he didn't mind. Now we have to move and I looked specifically for a place that allowed chickens. Again I found a home where the owners have built a coop from their chickens already and have no problem. I wouldn't even try to keep something like chickens. If they had a problem with a dog it will be more so with chickens. I think if you try it and are caught and you would eventually, if they don't like it it would ruin having pets there for anyone after you. Honestly I think being up front is the best policy, if you really want them and it's not allowed maybe keep that in mind when you have to move again. Good luck, I hope your allowed to I love having all our animals! Angela

Subject: RE: [CHICKENS-101] Chicken coops for renters
I'm sorry, but having
been on both sides of this issue, I feel the best policy is to ask your
landlord for approval. These are living creatures and if it turns out you are
in violation (and I am sure if you read your LEASE you will know what you can
and can't do without authorization) they could lose their homes.
I have owned rental property
in the past and if the tenant wanted to spruce up the yard on his own, that was
fine with me. But sprucing up the yard didn't entitle them to harboring animals
on the property without authorization from me or compliance with the city or
county code.
