Re: [CHICKENS-101] Two questions

We have over 200 hens free ranging on about an acre of pasture and a large red-tail hawk population, but we have three roosters that are super at sounding the alarm when a hawk is around.  The chickens can all run for cover once the rooster give them the signal.  The red-tail hawks are only interested in young hens, so we don't let newbies free range until they are a decent size.

We did have a migrating Ferruginous hawk couple around a few years ago that actually killed on of our roosters trying to run him off.  The hawk was huge and the rooster was huge too.  He died in the line of duty.  We had to keep our hens in the barn for quite a few days until they moved on.
