Chickens are flock animals, and it's a very strong instinct.
They like to be together in a group. Some more than others, but it's a very important facet of their personalities. They will all go inside together in the evening, it's the flocking instinct again. Safety in numbers. Even the ones who think they are free souls won't actually be very far away. And that very strong desire to be together is why they share nestboxes.
Makes me laugh to see them argue over it, drive each other out to get their turn, try to fit in all at once, then all share a different couple of spots the next week.
Sort of like people, if you think about it.
Amused,
Diane S.

Apparently the perfect world of Ole McDonals farm where all the chickens have a nest and only lat in their nest, doesn't equate to the modern world. LOL My chickens are like yours and apparently many others. Will stop worrying and let it go.Patrick
