Re: [CHICKENS-101] Been a Long Time.... Blindness

Jewel, Classic mareks symptoms.  So sorry.  Rather than let the mareks kill her I would gently put her to sleep.  I am so sorry.  Glad your other birds are doing well.  A chicken brought in a strain of mareks that your hen was not resistant too.  I'd save my money and skip the vet office call.  There is nothing you can do for mareks except to put them to sleep, especially when the virus attacks this aggressively.

Hi All,
I've disappeared for a while.  We've been so terribly busy with over 56 rescued roosters here now!
All the roosters are well, but we have one hen that was found dumped on the side of the road a few years ago.  She was healthy for the last few years, very full of personality and life.  A few weeks ago she started hiding out in the corner of her barn.  Her tail was not down.  She was in good feather.  Good weight.  No swelling in her abdomen or rattly lungs or bubbly eyes.  No mucous or anything like that.  Over the last week or two she started dropping weight and we brought her inside.  We see a grey hue to her eyes.  The pupil only.  The pupils are both equally dilated and even.  It appears she cannot see.  She's gone blind.  Grey pupils.  We're tube feeding her now and giving good vitamins and electrolytes.  I also have an appointment for her on Tuesday with our avian vet.  I was wondering if anyone else has a case of sudden blindness in chickens that is not involving trauma?  She was not physically hurt in any way to bring this on either.
From our latest rescue we have one completely blind hen and another with one blind eye.  What is bringing this on?
Jewel
