If your chickens have northern mites, DE will not work. Northern mites will take up house keeping in the chickens ears, tunnel into skin, et... A well known poultry vet at MSU diagnostics said they tried DE in many experiments wanting it to work as a de-wormer; didn't work. Nor was it completely effective on lice. I know it does not work on northern mites.

While not everyone is in total agreement about the effectiveness or non of Diatomaceous Earth (I for one myself happily seeing how well it DOES work), it could be irritating her eyes if she's rubbing her face directly in it's being in the grass. But then, so could particles of dirt or bits of grass or who knows what other things may have been picked up from doing the swiping.
I agree with Cathryn about checking the hen all over for little moving things if for no other reason than to verify or to rule out that's being a problem. And don't forget to check your nesting materials and box for the same as well, especially if she's doing it just after coming off the nest and no other times.
And for whatever it's worth, my chickens will swipe their beaks in the first thing they can after eating a particularly "sticky'ish" something – peanut butter, banana, pears, and the etc like – because it apparently "goo's" up their beaks as much as it does our own mouths. Have noticed when they do that, they sometimes get the stuff spread a little more up the outsides of their beaks then appear to rub/swipe their faces as well. Just saying that other chickens do that same thing and an action like that may not – or might – indicate nothing other than their doing a general "cleaning". Only you can tell that or not by watching & checking to rule any other possibilities out.

DE will not get rid of northern mites or lice, especially northern mites (who tunnel into flesh, not just bite). Have you picked her up, looked under down all over her body? Looked inside her mouth? Is her cleft nice and open, good color inside? Are her ears clear? Eyes bright and dark? Vent clean? Legs and feet clear of scale mites? When she gets off the nest, have you looked right away to see if there are mites on the eggs?
DE itself is an irritant and her eyes could have DE caught between the eyelids irritating her eyes, and leaving her with parasites crawling all over her and biting her.

Question: I have a broody silkie and when she comes out from the nest she gapes/yawns (adjusting crop?) and does a lot of swiping her face on the grass. I didn't see anything alive and 'moving' around her eyes etc. I dusted the dusting areas and nesting areas with diamataceous (sp?) powder. Should I be concerned about pests? What should I look for?
